Question:
The listener: Isa 'Abd al-Nabi 'Abd al-Rahman from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Beheira Governorate, sent a message saying: Is reciting the Qur'an over the deceased permissible, and does the sacrificial animal that the deceased's family slaughters before he is taken out for burial have a reward that reaches the deceased in his grave? We ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good?
Answer:
First, naming oneself ('Abd al-Nabi) is not permissible. So, your father's name being 'Abd al-Nabi is an error. Names are to be with Allah. The scholars have agreed that it is not permissible to make a slave of anyone other than Allah. So, one does not say: 'Abd al-Nabi, or 'Abd al-Ka'bah, or 'Abd 'Umar, but rather one says: 'Abd Allah, 'Abd al-Rahman, 'Abd al-Latif, and the like of the names of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). It is obligatory for your father, if he is alive, to change it. He should say: 'Abd Rabb al-Nabi. He changes his name to 'Abd Rabb al-Nabi, or 'Abd Allah, or 'Abd al-Rahman. He changes it.
As for reciting the Qur'an over the deceased, there is no basis for it. One does not recite over the deceased, nor at the grave. All of this is a religious innovation (bid'ah). As for before death, while he is in his final moments; there is nothing wrong with reciting Surat Yasin to him, or other from the Qur'an; because it was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Bulugh al-Maram 537 Your dying ones, meaning: those in their final moments. The one in his final moments is called: the deceased. And from this is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 1444Sahih (Darussalam) Meaning: the one to whom death has come is told: Say: There is no god but Allah; so that his last words are: There is no god but Allah. As for it being after death that one recites to him, no, it is not prescribed. Likewise, at the grave, it is not prescribed.
So, the believer should conduct himself with the prescribed etiquettes, and strive to adhere to what Allah has prescribed for His servants, and advise his brothers in that; because Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: Indeed, man is in loss, Except those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience [Al-'Asr:1-3].
And likewise, slaughtering after death is not prescribed. That he slaughters, holds a mourning gathering, or gives it in charity at the time of death; there is no evidence for this. But if he gives charity on his behalf after that -not at the time of death- he gives charity on his behalf with dirhams, he gives charity on his behalf with food, or a sacrificial animal which he distributes to the poor, not at the time of death, but at other times, there is nothing wrong with that; because charity benefits the deceased. As for his belief that he slaughters a sacrificial animal at the time of death; this has no basis for it. Yes.
