The Criterion for Qunut in the Prayers
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the criterion for qunut in the Fajr prayer and the other prayers? The Shaykh: What do you mean by the criterion? The questioner: I mean: some of the imams nowadays make supplications in their prayers; they perform qunut in the Fajr prayer and other prayers for emergencies and what is befalling the Muslim community now.
The Shaykh: This matter is entrusted to the Imam (the head of state). In our country, it is referred to the King. If he orders the qunut, we perform it; if he does not order it, we do not perform it.That some of the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) say: Qunut for emergencies is only for the Imam, the King alone; because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed qunut for emergencies, the other mosques did not perform qunut. The one responsible for the Muslim community in general is the King. So if he does not order qunut, we do not perform qunut. But we make supplication for our brothers in prostration, after the tashahhud, between the adhan and the iqamah, and at the end of the night. As for us taking it upon ourselves to perform qunut, that is a mistake; because this is entrusted to the one in authority. Therefore, the phrase of the jurists is: And qunut is not performed in the obligatory prayers unless an emergency befalls the Muslims, in which case the Grand Imam performs qunut in the obligatory prayers.
All five prayers, but it is the order of the Grand Imam,Meaning: the leader of the state.
So what we see: That no one performs qunut except by his order. And praise be to Allah, is supplication not answered except in qunut? It is answered at all times.
