Ruling on Opening Meetings and Celebrations with the Recitation of the Qur'an

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: What is your opinion on opening meetings and celebrations with the recitation of some verses from the Book of Allah, the Wise? The Shaykh: I see that there is nothing wrong with these celebrations; in fact, they are prescribed, but they are prescribed for other purposes. How is that? These celebrations bring about benefits: First: bringing joy to the students who have memorized, for they are pleased by this.

Second: It is a manifestation of honoring the Noble Qur'an, where people gather for it in order to celebrate it.

Third: It brings about meeting and getting to know one another among the brothers from every direction.

Fourth: It is not devoid of guidance, direction, and explanation of the virtue of the Qur'an and its memorization, and other such things. So, in reality, they are intended for other purposes and contain good. Therefore, we see nothing wrong with them, if we do not say that they are required because of these benefits we have mentioned.

The questioner: O Shaykh! What is the ruling on opening a meeting with the recitation of the Book of Allah? The Shaykh: I do not know of any basis for opening with something from the Qur'an, but it has become customary. It is better not to do so, and to open with praise and glorification of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and whatever speech is easy to deliver.
