Types of the Modes of Hajj

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed: This is the ninety-eighth session of the sessions known as (The Open Door), which take place every Thursday, and this Thursday is the ninth of the month of Dhul-Qa'dah in the year (1419 AH).
We mentioned that we would dedicate these sessions, on the occasion of the Hajj season, to speaking about Hajj. In the session prior to this one, we spoke about the conditions for the obligation of Hajj,And we explained that they are five: Islam, sanity, maturity, freedom, and the ability to perform it.
and we discussed this in detail, and the discussion of it has concluded. As for this session, we will speak in it about the manner of performing Hajj and 'Umrah.

So we say first: Know that the types of Hajj are three:Knowledge of that is obtained by following the pure Prophetic Sunnah: Tamattu', Qiran, and Ifrad.

And tamattu': It is for a person to enter the state of ihram for 'Umrah in the months of Hajj -Meaning: after the entry of the month of Shawwal - and complete it, then enter the state of ihram for Hajj in that same year, so that he has an independent 'Umrah and an independent Hajj, and he is required to offer a sacrificial animal, because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
then whoever performs 'umrah [during the Hajj months] followed by Hajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animalsفَمَنْ تَمَتَّعَ بِالْعُمْرَةِ إِلَى الْحَجِّ فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ
[al-Baqarah:196] .

And Qiran: It has two forms: The first form is that he enters the state of ihram for both -Meaning: for Hajj and 'Umrah - together from the miqat,So he says: saying: Labbaik 'Umrah and Hajj.

And the second form: The second form is that he enters the state of ihram for 'Umrah first, then he fears that he will miss standing at 'Arafah if he completes the 'Umrah, so he adds Hajj to it before beginning its tawaf.

As for the first form, its evidence is: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this: (For a person came to him while he was at Dhul-Hulayfah,So he said to him: saying: Pray in this blessed valley, and say: [performing] an 'Umrah in a Hajj, or an 'Umrah and a Hajj).

And as for the second form, its evidence is: The hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): (That she entered the state of ihram for 'Umrah, intending to perform tamattu', then menstruation came to her before she entered Makkah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to add Hajj to the 'Umrah so that she would be a qarin).

As for Ifrad: It is for a person to enter the state of ihram for Hajj alone, without 'Umrah,Meaning: traveling from his city to Makkah intending only Hajj. So how does the mutamatti' say in his talbiyah? He says: Labbaik 'Umrah.

There is no need for him to say: Performing it as tamattu' leading to Hajj; because the intention is sufficient,And as for the qarin, he says: Labbaik 'Umrah and Hajj.

And as for the mufrid, he says: saying, "Labbaik Hajjan."
Of these three types of Hajj, the best is tamattu'; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it and encouraged it,And he said: (If I had known in advance what I know now, I would have made it an 'Umrah) - and he was a qarin - then qiran, then ifrad. Qiran comes after tamattu' because it is included under the name of tamattu' according to the Salaf of this Ummah, and because the person in ihram combines in it an 'Umrah and a Hajj. And the least of them was ifrad; because it is only Hajj. The qarin is required to offer a sacrificial animal like the mutamatti', and if he does not find one, he fasts three days and seven days when he returns to his family.
