Ruling on the follower moving forward to a barrier after the imam’s closing salam

Sometimes the follower misses one or two units of prayer, so when the imam says the closing salam, he finds the barrier two or three steps away from him. Is it permissible for him to move forward to the barrier?
What appears to me from the practice of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) is that the one who joins the prayer late does not use a barrier, and that he makes up the missed units without a barrier.
