The Shaykh : So I say: What is the meaning of
and follows other than the way of the believers
[An-Nisa 4:115]
? He is compelled to use his opinion, intellect, and independent legal reasoning in the best way we can say, in order to interpret some of the texts, whether they relate to rulings or to beliefs. Let me give you an example now of a belief that the people of the Sunnah and the community are unique in upholding, which is explicitly stated in the Book and the Sunnah, but some of the other sects went astray when they contradicted this correct belief. I mean the Mu'tazilah, both old and new, and those in between. That is the seeing of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) in the Hereafter. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has explicitly stated this in the Noble Qur'an in His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord.
[Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23]
,
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord.
[Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23]
. This verse has been interpreted in a manner that contradicts the correct Sunnah.
The student : ... Never mind ... .

The Shaykh : The verse is:
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord.
[Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23]
,
Looking
. The Mu'tazilah and their followers among those who deny the seeing of Allah, including the Khawarij, and among the Khawarij the Ibadis who have been active recently and have begun to publish some treatises or some letters in which they refute the authentic, mass-transmitted hadiths in defense of their opinion. The cause of their opinion was that their early scholars—and I do not say their imams, because I do not know of any imams who excelled in knowledge among them such that it would be permissible for us to apply this term to them—came to this verse and interpreted it figuratively because their minds could not accommodate the possibility of this weak servant seeing the Great Lord on the Day of Resurrection, the day when people will be, as the Lord of the Worlds said:
A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:7]
. So the group in Paradise sees Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with their eyes, as stated in "Sahih al-Bukhari." I believe that those who interpreted this verse among those scholars who later became followed by some of the misguided sects, if they were sincere, their excuse is that they did not come across the hadiths that interpret this verse and make the sincere believer in Allah (Mighty and Majestic) submit to the fact that the verse is to be taken at its apparent meaning:
(22) [Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant, (23) Looking at their Lord.
[Al-Qiyamah 75:22-23]
. The hadiths did not reach them, so they interpreted it with interpretations that are nothing but denial of the divine attributes, because they said:
Looking toward their Lord
Looking toward their Lord
. So when their minds were too narrow to believe in the apparent meaning of the verse, they interpreted it with this null and void figurative interpretation. And in such an interpretation, I refute interpretations more dangerous than this one, where some of these interpretations take their adherents out of the religion, just as a hair comes out of dough.
