Distinguishing between intelligence, reason, and memorization, and explaining each of them.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We do not say that someone is intelligent just because of such-and-such; he may not be intelligent, but he may be reasonable. Therefore, these three ranks—reason, intelligence, and memorization—often get mixed up in people's minds.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Not every person with a good memory is intelligent, not every intelligent person is reasonable, not every reasonable person is intelligent, and not every intelligent person has a good memory, and so on. They may overlap, or they may differ. For example, peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. May Allah grant you goodness. Peace be upon you. These disbelievers who invented these innovations are undoubtedly intelligent; it is not necessary that they be people of good memory. Therefore, they always rely on recorded things, and consequently, it is not necessary that they be reasonable, for Allah says of the disbelievers:
And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze." وَقَالُوا لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ
[Al-Mulk 67:10]
. Thus, these people are not reasonable; they are intelligent. Therefore, we must not let these matters be confused in our minds.
