Continuation of the discussion on reconciling the two hadiths: “There is no contagion” and “Flee from the leper.”

The Shaykh : ... It is not permissible for a Muslim to speak in this manner, as if he is connected to it with the connection of a word, such as “It burns only if Allah wills, otherwise it does not burn.” This is how contagion is; in contagion, or in some diseases, there is a nature that Allah the Exalted has placed in them whereby they transfer from the sick to the healthy among creatures, but all of that is by the will of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. This is clear in the full text of the hadith when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned:
And there is no ill omen و لا طيرة
. The Bedouin man said:
We see that healthy camels enter among them a leper camel and it infects them, so he said to him (peace and blessings be upon him) إننا نرى الجمال السليمة يدخل بينها الجمل الأجرب فيعديها ، فقال له عليه السلام
— what he said to him was not that you did not understand me, as if I am saying there is no contagion. No, he intended to establish for him that contagion exists by the permission of Allah, and therefore he said to him:
So who infected the first one? فمن أعدى الأول ؟
. Of course, the answer of the believer is: Allah. So contagion exists, but by the permission of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. And thus, if the meaning of the hadith is
There is no contagion لا عدوى
except by the will of Allah the Exalted, then there is no contradiction in the Muslim taking the prescribed means to avoid being afflicted with that disease which is known among people as contagious. Where is the uncle? And on this basis, his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) is understood, as in Sahih Muslim:
That a man came to pledge allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he had a disease of leprosy in his hand, so he wanted to pledge allegiance to him, so he said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): “Go back, for we have already pledged allegiance to you” أن رجلا جاء ليبايع النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم و في يده مرضى جذام ، فأراد أن يبايعه ، فقال له عليه السلام ، ارجع فإنا قد بايعناك
. Either he (peace and blessings be upon him) did this by way of taking the means, or he did it to teach the people, or finally for both matters together, meaning teaching and taking the means.
So there is no contradiction between his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no contagion لا عدوى
, because it does not mean negating all contagion, but rather it means negating contagion as it was established in the minds of the first age of ignorance and the age of the twentieth century, which is that it transmits by itself. This is what the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) denied. Otherwise, the other hadiths affirm contagion. And on this basis came what is called today quarantine, whose foundation was laid by our Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) in his saying:
and if it breaks out in a land in which you are, do not leave it. إذا وقع الطاعون في أرض و أنتم فيها فلا تخرجوا منها
Riyad as-Salihin 1792
to the end of the hadith... This means taking the means of distancing oneself from the contagious disease. Other than that.
