Is it permissible for one who performs Hajj on behalf of another person to take a fee for it, and how should his intention be? Is it prescribed for him in supplication to make du'a for the person he performed Hajj for and for himself, or should he restrict the du'a to that person only?

The questioner : He says: I have resolved to perform Hajj this year for one of my relatives. What is your advice regarding what I should do in this Hajj from two aspects? First: Am I allowed to take a fee for this Hajj? Second: What should I do if I want to intend the Hajj? Third: When making du'a in this Hajj and in other rites, am I to restrict this man to the du'a and other acts of worship in this Hajj, or should I include myself with him, or what should I do? I ask for a detailed explanation of the issue of acting as a proxy for another.

The Shaykh : Yes, give me the first paragraph.

The questioner : He says: I have resolved to perform Hajj this year for one of my relatives. What is your advice regarding what I should do in this Hajj from two aspects? Am I allowed to take a fee for this Hajj?

The Shaykh : The answer to this paragraph is: From whom do you take the fee? If you want to donate the performance of Hajj and 'Umrah for one of your relatives, who is giving you the money? This part of the question is not applicable, because one who wants to donate does not take anything for his donation. The second paragraph?

The questioner : What should I do if I want to intend the Hajj?

The Shaykh : You say during the talbiyah: "Labbaik for so-and-so," and you name him. If you prefer that no one knows that you are performing Hajj on behalf of someone else, say "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik," and hold in your heart that you intend the talbiyah for this specific person.

The questioner : When making du'a in this Hajj and in other rites, am I to restrict this man to the du'a and other acts of worship in this Hajj?

The Shaykh : The one who performs Hajj on behalf of another dedicates the Hajj and what is related to it to the other person. As for du'a, it is for himself. However, it is better, it is better that he include the other person, meaning that he include the one for whom he performed Hajj or 'Umrah in the du'a. He should say, "O Allah, forgive the one for whom this Hajj or this 'Umrah was performed, forgive him and me, and have mercy on us." He should make du'a that includes himself and the one who gave him the money to perform Hajj with it. As for the remaining actions, such as tawaf, sa'y, standing at 'Arafah, staying overnight at Muzdalifah, stoning the pillars, staying overnight at Mina, and the farewell tawaf, all of this is for the one for whom he performed Hajj, and he has no share in it.
