A word by the Shaykh regarding tawassul and the meaning of tawassul.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the topic of today's lesson, it is tawassul (seeking nearness to Allah through a means), and do you know what tawassul is? It is the tawassul that has led some people to major shirk (associating partners with Allah) as one of its categories, while they do not know it. Linguistically, tawassul is derived from wasilah (means), and wasilah, wasilah (connection), tawassul, and tawassul (reaching) have very close meanings, because the sin and the sad always interchange, meaning that one borrows the place of the other. For this reason, the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Guide us to the straight path - اهدنا الصراط المستقيم
[Al-Fatihah 1:6]
is read with the sad, and it is read:
Guide us to the path اهدنا السراط
with the sin. Both are seven-canon readings, so it is permissible to read
(6) Guide us to the straight path - (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. اهدنا السراط المستقيم سراط الذين أنعمت عليهم
[Al-Fatihah 1:6-7]
or to say
(6) Guide us to the straight path - (7) The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray. اهدنا الصراط المستقيم صراط الذين أنعمت عليهم
[Al-Fatihah 1:6-7]
. Thus, tawassul and tawassul (reaching) have very close meanings. The wasilah is the means that leads to the intended goal; the means that leads to the intended goal is the wasilah.
