The signs that Allah sends to His servants may serve as confirmation for them, or they may serve as refutation of them.

The Shaykh : As for it being one of the signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it is because Allah answered his supplication with such speed. The signs of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in bringing water from the sky or from the earth are well known. They were on the expedition to al-Hudaybiyyah, and the water they had with them ran out. The people came to the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the water has run out.” There was a leather water-skin in front of him, so he put his hand in the water, and the water began to gush forth like springs until the people drank their fill and quenched their thirst. And Allah is capable of all things. This sign may have been a confirmation for the Messenger (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him), or the sign that Allah the Exalted sends may be a refutation of the one to whom it is sent. It is said that Musaylimah the Liar claimed prophethood, so some people came to him and called him by a false description. What was the false description? “O Messenger of Allah,” and he was one of the most lying of Allah’s servants. They said, “We have a well that has been drawn from, and there is only a little water in it. Come to it, perhaps Allah will place a blessing in it.” He came to the well, took water in his mouth, and spat it into it, expecting the water to rise to the top. But the water in it sank completely; what was there disappeared. This is a sign from the signs of Allah, but it is a sign to refute this man, not to confirm and believe in him. We return to the topic of discussion. The sixth section: Seeking nearness to Allah through the supplication of one whose response is hoped for. The rain continued to fall for a full week until the wadi known in the city as the Canal flowed for a full month. Then a man, or another man from the second Friday, came while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the sermon and said, “O Messenger of Allah, the buildings have collapsed and the water has flooded. Call upon Allah to hold it back.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands and said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1020 He gestured with his hand, and wherever he pointed, the clouds parted. It was not by the power of the Messenger, but by the power of Allah the Exalted. “O Allah, around us, not upon us.” The clouds began to disperse, raining around the city but not on the city. They came out of the prayer walking in the sun. The Bedouin, or the man, said, “Call upon Allah to hold it back.” Did he call upon Allah to hold it back? No, holding it back was not in the interest, but he made a supplication through which the benefit was achieved and the harm was removed. He said: Mishkat al-Masabih 5902.
