Exploiting the vacation to travel to lands of disbelief and immorality.
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Among people, there is a type who spend this vacation in ways that anger Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and thus they become among those who exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief. You find them going abroad, outside the country, to lands of disbelief, immorality, prostitution, and bad morals. These people have lost their religion and their worldly life. As for their religion, there is no doubt that the scenes they witness will have a profound effect on them, especially the young ones, for if something is imprinted on a child’s mind, it hardly ever leaves. And they have lost their worldly life, because they spend vast sums of money on such travel: hotels, transportation, and other expensive costs. Furthermore, they increase the wealth of the disbelievers; they increase the wealth of the disbelievers, because the disbelievers derive great profit from the tourists who arrive in their lands. For this reason, I say, and take this from me: that traveling to the lands of the disbelievers is forbidden except with three conditions. The first condition is that the person has knowledge with which he can repel doubts. The second is that he has a religion that protects him from desires. The third is that he has a need for it. As for the person who does not have knowledge and fears for himself from the doubts he hears or reads there, he should not go, because if he goes, his faith will be shaken, he will doubt after having faith, and he will waver after having certainty, and this is destruction for the person. Likewise, if he does not have a strong religion, meaning that he will be corrupted by the corrupt and the scenes will entice him to corruption, he should not go either, because preserving the religion is more important than preserving the body. What is the third? The need for it. He must need it, either for knowledge that has no equivalent in the Kingdom, or for a disease he is treating, or for trade that is necessary. And if he has no need, he should not go. How many people go abroad under the guise of walking and recreation, and their morals are corrupted and their beliefs dissolve, may Allah protect us from that, and they return distorted. There is no doubt that this is not permissible for a Muslim to expose himself to, because of the evil and corruption in it. This is what concerns the types of people in this vacation. And I repeat to my brothers: that they should exploit this vacation with what is good, either in religion or in worldly life. The best way to spend this vacation is seeking knowledge. Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Nothing is comparable to knowledge".
I ask Allah the Exalted to grant us and you the ability to seize the times with what pleases Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Now to the questions.
