Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says: Your Eminence, I read for you in one of the mosques of Unaizah a notice posted in the mosque, the content of which is: that if childbirth becomes difficult for a woman, it is possible to recite certain surahs and verses, and so on. It was mentioned in the notice that, by way of experiment, it has a positive effect. So, do we make what is achieved through experiment a standard for the Shari'ah and worship, or not?

The Shaykh : Yes. As for the question, as we heard, he says: the pregnant woman whose labor is difficult is the one who recites. That is not the case. Rather, it is recited for her in water, and she is given to drink from it, and it is used to wipe the area around the birth canal. This is beneficial by the permission of Allah. As for experiment, if the one experimenting has a basis for it, then the experiment serves as confirmation of that basis. If there is no basis for it, then if this experiment is in tangible matters, there is no doubt that it is a reliable criterion. But if it is in religious matters, then no. The noble Qur'an has a basis for seeking healing through it. Allah the Exalted said:
And We send down of the Qur'an that which is healing and mercy for the believers وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ مَا هُوَ شِفَاءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ
[Al-Isra 17:82]
So it has a basis. If you experiment with verses from the Qur'an for a certain illness and it proves beneficial, this benefit becomes a confirmation of what came in the Qur'an that it is a healing for people. As for matters other than acts of worship, these are subject to experiment without a doubt. For example, if a person has insight into what comes out of the earth, such as herbs and the like, and he goes out to the wilderness and gathers what he sees to be beneficial and experiments with it, then the ruling is established by that. Yes.
