Self-Accounting Regarding the Discharge of Debts and the Treatment of Family.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : You must hold yourself to account. Have you fulfilled what is obligatory toward those who deal with you? Have you paid the debt that is due from you, which is not deferred and which you are able to pay? If you delay paying it, you are in a state of injustice until you pay it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Delaying the payment of a wealthy person is injustice. مطل الغني ظلم
. So every moment that passes for a person who has a due debt and does not pay it, he is an oppressor. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be on your guard against committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrection اتقوا الظلم فإن الظلم ظلمات يوم القيامة
Sahih Muslim 2578
. So think, my brother, about your dealings with your family. Have you fulfilled the duty toward your wife? Have you treated her with kindness? Or have you treated her like a dumb slave, not caring about her, not concerned with fulfilling her rights, but rather neglecting and degrading her? Think about your children. Have you fulfilled their right to obligatory care? To keeping them away from what is forbidden? To encouraging them to do what is obligatory? All of this is what we must hold ourselves to account for. Think. Have you fulfilled the rights of your Muslim brothers? Do you spread the greeting of peace, or do you boycott them? Think about yourself. Have you ever lied in the past year? Have you been sincere in your dealings? There are many things and many things that we let slip and neglect, and we do not hold ourselves to account for them. Yet the merchants, who are the owners of perishable wealth, you find them being very precise at the end of the year. As for the future, we do not know what Allah is doing in the coming year. Our days are three: a day that has passed with what was in it and cannot be recovered, a future day in which we do not know what Allah is doing, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
no soul perceives what it will earn tomorrow وما تدري نفس ماذا تكسب غدا
[Luqman 31:34]
. And our present day, its beginning has passed and its end has not yet come, and we do not know what will be in it. So we must prepare ourselves for the future, with a sincere resolve and a complete desire for good, so that we receive and welcome our new year with effort, sincerity, and obedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And let the brothers know that this world is not a place of permanent residence for a person to strive to complete luxury in it. It is a place of passage, it is a place of righteous work. But it is, by Allah, the sweetest place for one who does good. The sweetest place for others. Otherwise, the Hereafter is better and more lasting. There is no doubt, but if someone were to ask: Who is the sweetest person in life in this world? We would say: It is the one who believed and did good deeds, as our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
[An-Nahl 16:97]
