A word by the Shaykh regarding the hadith of Ibn 'Umar, "Islam is built on five," and how the two testimonies are counted as a single pillar.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Last time, we spoke about the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Al-Islam implies that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, and you establish prayer, pay Zakat الإسلام أن تشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمدا رسول الله، وتقيم الصلاة وتؤتي الزكاة ...
Sahih Muslim 8a
to the end of it.
We raised an issue, which is: how are the testimonies that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah counted as a single pillar?
And we answered it. So what is the answer we gave regarding this issue?
Yes...
The student: The two testimonies are, in reality, a single pillar, because the testimony that there is no god but Allah necessitates sincerity, and the testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah necessitates following [the Prophet].
No deed is accepted unless these two conditions are present: sincerity and following [the Prophet].

The Shaykh : Yes. He says they are a single pillar, because the testimony that there is no god but Allah includes sincerity, and the testimony that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah includes following [the Prophet].
And these are the two fundamental conditions for every deed.
For no deed by which one draws near to Allah is accepted except with sincerity and following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
