The questioner : In our village, on the night of 'Id al-Fitr or the blessed night of 'Id al-Adha, when people know that tomorrow is the festival, they go out to the graves at night, light candles on the graves of their dead, and invite the shaykhs to recite the Qur'an over the graves. What is the validity of this action? May Allah reward you with the best reward for us and for the Muslims?

The Shaykh : This action is an invalid, forbidden act, and it is a cause for the curse of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those who visit graves, those who make mosques and lamps upon them, and going out to the graveyards on the night of the festival. Even if it is just for visiting, it is a religious innovation (bid'ah), for it has not been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he specified the night of the festival or the day of the festival for visiting the graveyard. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error إياكم! ومحدثات الأمور، فإن كل محدثة بدعة، وكل بدعة ضلالة، وكل ضلالة في النار
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
Therefore, a person must be careful in his acts of worship and in everything he does to draw near to Allah (Mighty and Majestic); he must be careful to follow the Shari'ah of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). This is because the original ruling regarding acts of worship is prohibition and restriction, except for what evidence has established as prescribed (mashru'). What the questioner mentioned regarding lighting lamps on graves on the nights of the festival, evidence has indicated its prohibition and that it is among the major sins, as I pointed out a moment ago, that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those who visit graves, those who make mosques and lamps upon them. Yes.

The questioner : This message is from the noble listener, Hussein from Jordan. He says in his message:
