The questioner : Is it permissible for a woman to cut her hair from the front in what is called a fringe?

The Shaykh : A woman’s head is undoubtedly her beauty and her covering, and most women desire to have hair. For this reason, a dispensation was granted to her in Hajj; indeed, it is prescribed for her in Hajj and 'Umrah to shorten her hair by the width of a finger from each braid. The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on the permissibility of a woman cutting her head hair. Some said it is disliked, some said it is forbidden, and some said it is permissible, meaning lawful, except if she cuts it in a way that resembles a man’s head, in which case it is forbidden. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

. I see that the best and most preferable course is for a woman not to cut her head hair. Accepting the customs of others and adopting them without benefit is something that should not be done, for this may turn the community toward the customs of other societies, which may distance it from the customs approved by the Shari'ah. However, if she cuts it so that it resembles a man’s head, there is no doubt that it is forbidden, as we have mentioned. In fact, it is one of the major sins.
