The questioner : I heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the effect that he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and found that she had placed a curtain on the wall, which is what is called curtains in our current era, so he said to her: "We are a people who were not commanded to cover the walls or the wall." Does it follow from this noble hadith that it is obligatory for such curtains to be the size of the window opening, or is it permissible for them to be the width of the wall on which the window is located, meaning that the curtains are on the sides of the window? Please inform us, may Allah reward you?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. The hadith the questioner referred to is in "Sahih Muslim" that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this curtain on the door, and that appeared on his face, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
God has not commanded us to clothe stones and clay إن الله لم يأمرنا أن نكسو الحجارة والطين، ثم هتكه
Sahih Muslim 2106f, 2107a
So in this hadith there is evidence that it is not befitting for a person to reach a state where he covers the walls of his house with these coverings that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked, and that was evident on his face, and he informed us that Allah did not command us to do that. As for the curtains that are placed on the windows, if they are for a valid purpose other than covering, such as if a person wants to use them to shield the face of the window from the sun or the like, then there is nothing wrong with it, because it is not a covering for the stones and clay, but it is for protection from harm that is anticipated or for a benefit that is hoped for with this covering. As for mere adornment, meaning merely decorating the wall with this covering, then this falls under the hadith, and it is not befitting for us to do it. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you. This is a listener from Sudan, 'Awad Allah, residing in Jeddah, who says in his message.
