The Shaykh’s discussion on hanging curtains on the wall down to the floor, which serves no purpose.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Covering the wall is something the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command, and this phrasing is not a text prohibiting it, but rather it falls under the general prohibition of wastefulness in the Shari'ah. This type of wall covering has a reality today, and it is rare, for example, a carpet hung on the wall for decoration, and there is no need to prevent exposure, or prevent the sun, or similar benefits. But the thing that has become the fashion of the present age, and this fashion has seeped into the homes of many Muslims whose affairs revolve around one of two things: either ignorance of the Shari'ah rulings, or laxity in adhering to and applying them, and both may be present, either ignorance and laxity.
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : I mean by this, for example, this window is here, so the curtain is made from the top to the floor. This is extending the curtain beyond the exposed limit by more or less an arm's length, and so on. All of this is a matter of ostentation, and you must be observing this in many homes. This is what should not be the case. The curtain must be in proportion to the light. For example, if the light is two meters, they should leave two meters plus three or four centimeters, for example, out of caution or desire, and so on. But down to the floor! I compare extending the curtain to the floor to dragging the tails to the floor, about which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The belt of the believer is to the middle of the shin, and if it is longer, then to the ankles, and if it is longer, then in the Fire. أزرة المؤمن إلى نصف الساق ، فإن طال فإلى الكعبين ، فإن طال ففي النار
, and he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. من جرّ إزاره خيلاء ، لم ينظر الله - عز وجل - إليه يوم القيامة
Is that correct?
The student : Yes, our Shaykh, may Allah reward you with good. Yes, you said: in one degree! Yes, our Shaykh.

The Shaykh : So it should be observed, and we should not be among the wasteful,
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils إِنَّ الْمُبَذِّرِينَ كَانُوا إِخْوَانَ الشَّيَاطِينِ
[Al-Isra 17:27]
