Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Does the punishment of the grave pertain to the soul or the body?

The Shaykh : The punishment of the grave is established by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). As for the Book of Allah, Allah the Exalted said:
And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
[Al-An'am 6:93]
And by His saying regarding the family of Pharaoh:
The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and evening. And the Day the Hour appears [it will be said], "Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment."
[Ghafir 40:46]
.
As for the hadiths concerning the punishment of the grave, they are numerous. Among them is the hadith known by both the specialized and the general among Muslims, which is the saying of the one who prays:
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal.
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
The punishment of the grave is originally upon the soul, but it may sometimes connect to the body, especially when the person is asked about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet at the time of his burial. Then his soul is returned to his body, but it is a return of the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection) that does not relate to the body as it did in this world. The deceased is asked about his Lord, his Prophet, and his religion. If he is a disbeliever or a hypocrite, he says: "Ah, ah, I do not know; I heard the people saying something, so I said it." Then he is struck with an iron mallet, and he lets out a scream that everything hears except humans. If humans were to hear it, they would be stunned. Yes.
