Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q200: The questioner Abu Hamid says in his message: Is the punishment of the grave established? And what is the evidence for that from the Sunnah?
A200: There is no doubt that the punishment of the grave is established by the Book, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus. Allah the Exalted said:[As-Sajdah 32:21]
, and the lesser punishment is—may Allah know best—the punishment of the grave, as the exegetes have mentioned. As for the Sunnah, there are many hadiths, among them: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by two graves and said—(peace and blessings be upon him): The deceased is punished in his grave for his sins. Likewise, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So wailing is a cause for the punishment of the deceased.

And we will surely let them taste the nearer punishment short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will repent.

Indeed, they are being punished, and they are not being punished for a great [sin]. As for one of them, he used not to shield himself from his urine, and as for the other, he used to go about spreading talebearing.
The deceased is punished by the wailing over him.
