Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : He says: Consult us, may Allah reward you with good, regarding the accepted supplication, the supplication of istikharah?

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The supplication of istikharah is prescribed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded it in every matter that a person intends to undertake but in which the correct course is not clear to him, such as intending to travel, or to buy a house or a car, or to get married, or similar matters in which he hesitates and the correct course is not clear to him. He should then pray two rak'ahs and say the closing salam, then supplicate to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) with the supplication that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded:
O Allah, I seek Your counsel through Your knowledge, and I seek Your power through Your might, and I ask You of Your immense bounty. Indeed, You know and I do not know, and You have power and I do not have power, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if this matter—and he names it—is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, or he said, the immediate and deferred aspects of my affair, then decree it for me and make it easy for me. And if You know that this matter—and he names it—is evil for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, or he said, the immediate and deferred aspects of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me the good wherever it may be, and then make me content with it.
If a person performs this act and the correct course becomes clear to him, he should do it. If it does not become clear, and the matter remains obscure and he continues to hesitate, let him repeat the istikharah a second time and a third time until the correct course becomes clear to him. There is no harm in consulting someone from whom he knows sincerity, trustworthiness, and knowledge, so that they may increase his resolve or his restraint. It has been said: "No one who consulted has regretted, and no one who sought istikharah has been disappointed".
