Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The questioner states that he is of Somali nationality, married a Somali woman in 1983, and they had agreed on a bridal gift of fifteen camels. He now has children from her and wants to give her her bridal gift because it is a debt on him, although she has not asked for it. However, he does not have any camels. Can he give her the cash equivalent of their value?

The Shaykh : The bridal gift you stipulated for your wife is her right. Since it is her right, the decision rests with her. If she waives it, it is waived, provided she is of sound mind. If she waives part of it, that part is waived. If you agree with her on a substitute in place of the camels that became a debt in your possession, this agreement is valid. The right is between you two, so whatever you both agree upon is permissible.
