If a person performs wudu' and takes a ghusl to remove major ritual impurity, is it permissible for him to pray with that wudu' after the ghusl, or must he perform wudu' again?

The questioner : If a person performs wudu' and takes a ghusl to remove major ritual impurity, is it permissible for him to pray with that wudu' after the ghusl, or must he perform wudu' again?

The Shaykh : The answer is that if a person is in a state of major ritual impurity and he takes a ghusl, then that suffices for him in place of wudu', based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves وإن كنتم جنباً فاطهروا
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
It is not obligatory for him to repeat the wudu' after the ghusl unless a nullifier of wudu' occurs. If he does something that nullifies the wudu' after the ghusl, then he must perform wudu'. However, if he does not do anything that nullifies it, then his ghusl for major ritual impurity suffices for him in place of wudu', whether he performed wudu' before it or not. But it is necessary to pay attention to rinsing the mouth and sniffing water into the nose, for both are required in wudu' and ghusl.
