It is well known that among the recommended practices (sunnah) of the ghusl for major ritual impurity, and likewise for Jumu'ah, is wudu' (ablution), just as wudu' is performed for prayer. Does the wudu' of the ghusl suffice for the wudu' of prayer?

The questioner : The last question!!

The Shaykh : No, what was this last one?!

The questioner : No, the last question, this is the most important thing!

The Shaykh : Okay, good, may Allah will it.

The questioner : It is well known that among the recommended practices (sunnah) of the ghusl for major ritual impurity, and likewise for Jumu'ah, is wudu' (ablution), just as wudu' is performed for prayer. Does the wudu' of the ghusl suffice for the wudu' of prayer?

The Shaykh : You mean without the ghusl?

The questioner : I performed the ghusl.

The Shaykh : May Allah answer you and guide you. Your question is: does the wudu' suffice without the ghusl, or not?

The questioner : Does the wudu' of the ghusl suffice for the wudu' of prayer?

The Shaykh : My brother, if he performs the ghusl and does not perform wudu', he prays!

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : But the recommended practice, as I said, is to perform wudu' before the ghusl. However, if he does not perform wudu' and performs the ghusl, the prayer is permissible.

The questioner : Yes, and what is the evidence for this?

The Shaykh : The evidence is that the Messenger (peace be upon him) was asked about the ghusl and said:
As for me, I pour three handfuls of water over my head, and when I am pure أما أنا فأحثي على رأسي ثلاث حثيات ، فإذا أنا طاهر
This is the obligatory, prescribed ghusl. But the recommended practice is to perform wudu' before the ghusl, as the Messenger (peace be upon him) used to do.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And may Allah protect you, if Allah wills.

The questioner : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
