The questioner : I hear a lot among us about the existence of buried treasures placed in the depths of the earth long ago, with a guardian from the jinn over them, and in order to extract this treasure, the knowledgeable ones about their locations go to such-and-such a shaykh, who has sufficient knowledge of the science of extracting treasures and dealing with the jinn. They recite over them a type of verses from the Noble Qur'an and talismans, and it is said that they actually extract them and reveal them and are able to defeat the jinn. Is this action permissible or is it sorcery? We ask for guidance on this?
The Shaykh : This action is not permissible, for these talismans by which they summon the jinn and use them are, in most cases, free from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and shirk is a serious matter. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:72] And the one who goes to them incites them and deceives them; he incites them with their own selves and that they are on the right path, and he deceives them with the money he gives them.
So it is obligatory to boycott these people, and a person should refrain from going to them and should warn his Muslim brothers from going to them. The common case with people like these is that they play with people and extort their money without right. They say things by guesswork, and if it happens to be correct, they spread it among people, saying, "We said it and it happened." And if it does not happen, they make false claims that it was that which prevented this thing.
And I direct this advice on this occasion to those who have been afflicted with this matter, and I say to them: Beware of lying to people, shirk (associating partners with Allah), and taking people's money by falsehood. For the duration of this world is short, and the Reckoning on the Day of Resurrection is severe. You must repent to Allah the Exalted from this action, and you must correct your deeds and purify your wealth. And Allah is the One who grants success.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh Muhammad, and magnify your reward...
The Shaykh : This action is not permissible, for these talismans by which they summon the jinn and use them are, in most cases, free from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and shirk is a serious matter. Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
