The Muslim Jinn and the Disbelieving Jinn

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the difference between Shaytan and the jinn? Does Shaytan reproduce from a male and a female? If their father was expelled from Paradise because he disobeyed his Lord and Allah threatened him with the Fire, why does he not advise his sons to save themselves from the Fire? Does Shaytan deal with humans by serving them in exchange for their disobedience to their Lord? Are there Muslim jinn who serve Muslims as they served our master Sulayman (peace be upon him)? If Shaytan or the jinn are capable of serving humans, why do not the Muslim jinn help the human Muslims in their war against the disbelievers, by conveying their secrets and supporting Islam? And why do not the disbelieving jinn help the human disbelievers in any way? I ask for guidance on these matters.
And if I intend to do good in my heart, does Shaytan know about it and try to divert me from it? If all this exists, is there evidence from the Qur'an and the Sunnah? Did examples of this occur during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? If there is a book containing such issues, please direct me to it so that I can be saved from the evil of the Shayatins. May Allah save you and me from their evils.

A : The Shayatins are from the jinn; they are the rebels and the wicked among them, just as the Shayatins of humans are the rebels and the wicked among humans. So, among the jinn and the humans there are Shayatins, who are their rebels and their wicked ones from the disbelievers and the open sinners. And among them are Muslims from the righteous and the good, just as among the humans there are the righteous and the good. Allah the Exalted said:
And thus We have made for every prophet an enemy - devils from mankind and jinn, inspiring to one another decorative speech in delusion. But if your Lord had willed, they would not have done it, so leave them and that which they invent.
[Al-An'am: 112].
Shaytan is the father of the jinn according to a group of scholars. He is the one who disobeyed his Lord and was arrogant about prostrating to Adam, so Allah expelled him and drove him away. Others among the scholars said: Shaytan is from a group of the angels called the jinn. He was arrogant about prostrating, so Allah expelled him and drove him away, and he became the leader of all evil, all wickedness, and every disbeliever and oppressor.
And every person has a Shaytan with him and an angel with him, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you is without a companion from the jinn and a companion from the angels.
Sunan ad-Darimi 20:30
They said: And you, O Messenger of Allah? He said:
but Allah helps me against him and so I am safeوأنا إلا أن الله أعانني عليه فأسلم
Sahih Muslim 2814a
.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) informed that Shaytan dictates evil to the human and calls him to evil. He has a whisper in his heart, and by the decree of Allah, he has knowledge of what the servant intends of good and evil deeds. The angel likewise has a whisper in his heart, dictating good to him and calling him to good. So these are things Allah has enabled them to do: that is, He has enabled the two companions, the companion from the jinn and the companion from the angels. Even the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has a Shaytan with him, which is the companion from the jinn as mentioned before. This is the hadith regarding that, the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
None of you is without a companion from the angels and from the jinn.
Sunan ad-Darimi 20:30
They said: And you, O Messenger of Allah? He said:
but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand and he does not command me but for good.
Sahih Muslim 2814a
The point is that every person has a companion from the angels and a companion from the Shayatins. So the believer overpowers his Shaytan by obeying Allah and being upright in His religion, and he humbles his Shaytan until he becomes weak and unable to prevent the believer from good or to cause him to fall into evil, except what Allah wills. And the sinner, by his sins and bad deeds, helps his Shaytan until he becomes strong enough to help him with falsehood, encourage him in falsehood, and discourage him from good.
So the believer should fear Allah and strive to fight his Shaytan by obeying Allah and His Messenger, and by seeking refuge in Allah from Shaytan. He should strive to help his angel in obeying Allah and His Messenger and carrying out the commands of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic. The Muslims help their brothers from the jinn in obeying Allah and His Messenger, just as they do with humans. The humans may help them in some matters even if the humans do not know about it. They may help them in obeying Allah and His Messenger through teaching and reminding, along with the humans. The jinn may attend the lessons of the humans in mosques and elsewhere and benefit from them. The humans may hear something from them that benefits them. They may wake them up for prayer. They may alert them to things that benefit them and about things that harm them. All of this is a reality, even if they do not manifest themselves to people.
The jinn may manifest themselves to some people in guiding them to good or in guiding them to evil. This may happen, but it is rare. The norm is that they do not appear to the human, and if they are heard sometimes, it is when they wake him up for prayer or inform him of some news.
So, in summary, the believing jinn have assistance for the believers, even if the believers do not know it, and they wish them all good. Likewise, the believing humans wish all good for their believing brothers from the jinn and ask Allah for good for them. They may attend lessons and love listening to the Qur'an and knowledge, as mentioned before. So the believing jinn attend the lessons of the humans, sometimes and in some lands, and they benefit from the lessons of the humans. All of this is a reality and is known. Many scholars have stated this explicitly, those with whom the jinn have connected and asked them about some scholarly issues, and they informed them that they attend his lessons. All of this is a known matter, and Allah is the One to be sought for help.
And Allah, the Exalted, informed about the jinn hearing the Qur'an from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) at the end of Surat al-Ahqaf, where He, the Exalted, said:
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur'an. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen quietly." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.
[Al-Ahqaf 46:29]
They said: "O our people, indeed we have heard a Book revealed after Moses, confirming what is before it, guiding to the truth and to a straight path" and the two verses after it [Al-Ahqaf: 29-30]. And He, the Exalted, revealed a separate surah regarding that, which is the surah:
Say, [O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا
[Al-Jinn 72:1]
the surah [Al-Jinn: 1].
There are many books written on this topic. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned much of this in his books. There is a book by some scholars titled Al-Murjan fi Bayan Ahkam al-Jinn by its author al-Shabli, and it is a beneficial book. There are other books composed on this topic, and a person can seek them out and ask about them in commercial libraries. He can also benefit from books of tafsir on Surat al-Jinn and the other verses from Surat al-Ahqaf and others that contain news about the jinn. By reviewing the tafsirs, a person benefits from that and from what the mufassirun (may Allah have mercy on them) said about the news of the jinn, their wicked and their righteous.
