The questioner : When I was stationed in the Yemen Arab Republic, I observed that most of the residents in the countryside had a water pool next to the mosque, attached to the mosque, in which these people performed ablution and recited dhikr. The water inside it had changed in color, taste, and smell, and they say that there is a certain amount of water in which a person can perform ablution. What is your advice to them?

The Shaykh : We say that if this water in the pool is stagnant and does not flow, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited bathing in it, saying:
then (you may need to) wash in it لا يغتسل أحدكم في الماء الدائم الذي لا يجري
Sahih al-Bukhari 239
Because bathing in this stagnant water that does not flow makes it dirty, and perhaps a person may have diseases that affect others.
My advice to these people is to avoid this practice they are doing in this stagnant water that does not flow. Also, perhaps some of them are exposing their 'awrah, which would be a clear sin, because it is not permissible for a person to expose his 'awrah to any of the people so that they can see it. They can install bathrooms and tanks above these bathrooms from which they can perform ablution and bathe.

The questioner : Our dear listening brothers, our meeting was with His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, professor at the College of Sharia in Qassim, and the preacher and imam of the Grand Mosque in Unaizah. May Allah reward him, and thank you as well, our noble brothers, for your good follow-up.
