The questioner : I am a young man who was involved in a traffic accident, and there is no turning back from the decree of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). He says: This accident caused me a spinal injury, leading to an inability to control the process of excretion and an inability to perform wudu'. My question is: Since I cannot perform wudu' and tayammum is difficult for me, what should I do, O honorable Shaykh? Do I pray without wudu' and tayammum?

The Shaykh : As for the inability to perform wudu', if the questioner means by wudu' what many common people intend, which is washing the private parts from urine or feces, I say that if he means that, he can perform istijmar with tissues in a manner prescribed by the Shari'ah, consisting of three wipes or more that purify him, and that suffices him in place of water.
And if he means by wudu' washing the limbs, or more accurately, purifying the four limbs, which are the face, the hands, the head, and the feet, and he is unable to perform wudu' in this manner, then he should perform tayammum. He strikes the ground with his hands and wipes his face and palms with them.
If he is unable to do that and has no one to perform tayammum for him, then he prays according to his condition, and there is no blame on him, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So fear Allah as much as you are able فاتقوا الله ما استطعتم
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
And if I order you to do something, then do of it as much as you can. إذا أمرتكم بأمر فاتوا منه ما استطعتم
Sahih al-Bukhari 7288
