I love you for the sake of Allah, and Allah the Exalted says, "And woe to the polytheists who do not give zakah." What is meant by the polytheists, and how are they commanded to give zakah?

The questioner : Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : He says, "I love you for the sake of Allah."
And he says: Allah the Exalted says:
And woe to those who associate others with Allah - (7) Those who do not give zakah
[Fussilat 41:6-7]
.
What is meant by the polytheists, and how are they commanded to give zakah?

The Shaykh : That he loves me for the sake of Allah, so I ask Allah the Exalted to love him as I love him for His sake, and to make us all among those who love one another for His majesty and greatness, so that we may benefit from it in His presence.
As for his question about the verse:
And woe to those who associate others with Allah - (7) Those who do not give zakah
[Fussilat 41:6-7]
, his statement:
who do not give zakah
carries two possible meanings:
- One of them is that what is meant by zakah is the purification of the soul, which is its cleansing from shirk (associating partners with Allah), based on His saying:
He has succeeded who purifies it * and he has failed who defiles it
. In that case, his statement:
Those who do not give zakah
[Fussilat 41:7]
is an explanation of his statement:
to the polytheists للمشركين
, meaning those who do not give their souls their purification by abandoning shirk and its means.
- The second possibility is that what is meant by zakah is the zakah of wealth, and their leaving of zakah, meaning their leaving of giving, is among their characteristics, even though this is not zakah, because as long as they remain upon their shirk, neither zakah nor anything else is accepted from them.
