Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : This is a listener to the program, a listener from the Arab Republic of Egypt, Amir Abd al-Hamid, residing in Dammam in Saudi Arabia. He says in this question: A man who owns a trading shop sells via cash and via credit, giving the one who pays cash a lower price than the one who pays on credit. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view regarding this transaction, and is it lawful or forbidden?

The Shaykh : Yes. This transaction is lawful and there is nothing wrong with it.

The questioner : Very well.

The Shaykh : That is, if a person has a commodity and sells it for one hundred in cash and for one hundred and twenty on credit, then there is nothing wrong with it, and such a transaction is permissible by scholarly consensus because it falls under the general meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted
But Allah has permitted trade وأحل الله البيع
[Al-Baqarah 2:275]
and His saying
O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term يا أيها الذين ءامنوا إذا تداينتم بدين إلى أجل مسمى
[Al-Baqarah 2:282]
, and because this is analogous to salam, which was lawful in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah and they were making forward sales in fruits for one year or two years, so he said:
Those who pay in advance for anything must do so for a specified measure and weight with a specified time fixed. من أسلف في شيء فليسلف في كيل معلوم ووزن معلوم إلى أجل معلوم
Mishkat al-Masabih 2883
"
It is well known that salam, which is paying the price in advance and delaying the delivery of the commodity, must involve a difference between the price of the salam and the spot price. The issue mentioned by the questioner is the reverse of salam in form, but it is salam in meaning. Yes.
