The questioner : This listener, Sa'd Ali from Al-Mukhayat Secondary School in Al-Bahah, actually has a set of questions, starting with this one. He mentions that he is a religious young man and praises Allah for that. He says, "But my problem is that I failed the first-round exam, yet I did not become distressed, praise be to Allah, but rather I was patient, knowing that there are young men who do not pray except a little, do not remember Allah except a little, and commit violations, and yet they succeeded. Is study connected to religion or not? We ask for guidance on this. May Allah reward you." He says, "Knowing that I will never turn back from my faith, but some people insult me. What is the opinion of the Shari'ah in your view regarding my situation?"
The Shaykh : Yes. What we see in your case is that religion has no effect on your lagging behind in studies and your failure in them. In fact, religion may be a cause of your success, because religion is the mindfulness of Allah. And Allah the Exalted said:[At-Talaq 65:4] [At-Talaq 65:2-3] So do not be deceived by false hopes and misleading whispers, thinking that your activity in worship is the cause of your lagging behind in studies. Perhaps, if you had not been at a high level of worship, the lagging would have been even more and more, and you do not know. But study and acquiring knowledge are from the grace of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and Allah gives His grace to whom He wills. So you must turn to your Lord with supplication and seeking forgiveness, and not be arrogant with your deeds toward your Lord. Then strive as much as you can in your lessons, in memorization, understanding, and research. Perhaps Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will grant you success after this. Do not despair, for if you do not succeed this year, you will succeed in the second year. How many people have struggled and not succeeded in the first year, but succeeded in the second or third year.
The important thing is that you do not abandon study because of your failure for one or two years, but rather continue. And do not abandon religion thinking that it has an effect on your success, for that is from the whispers and delusions of Satan to turn you away from the remembrance of Allah. Yes.
The questioner : May Allah reward you, esteemed Shaykh, for what you have clarified for us.
The Shaykh : Yes. What we see in your case is that religion has no effect on your lagging behind in studies and your failure in them. In fact, religion may be a cause of your success, because religion is the mindfulness of Allah. And Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him of his matter ease.
ومن يتق الله يجعل له من أمره يسراAnd whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
ومن يتق الله يجعل له مخرجا ويرزقه من حيث لا يحتسبThe important thing is that you do not abandon study because of your failure for one or two years, but rather continue.
