The Shaykh : As we also heard in what our imam recited this night, Surat al-Waqi'ah, that great surah in which Allah divided people into three groups after the Hour and at death.
At the beginning of the surah, Allah divided people after the Hour into three groups: the foremost, the companions of the right, and the companions of the left.
So He said regarding the foremost:

⁽¹¹⁾ Those are the ones brought near [to Allah] ⁽¹²⁾ In the Gardens of Pleasure, ⁽¹³⁾ A [large] company of the former peoples ⁽¹⁴⁾ And a few of the later peoples,

وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ * أُولَئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ * فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ * ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ * وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ

[Al-Waqi'ah 56:11-14]

And He said regarding the companions of the right:

⁽²⁷⁾ The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right? ⁽²⁸⁾ [They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed ⁽²⁹⁾ And [banana] trees layered [with fruit] ⁽³⁰⁾ And shade extended

وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ * فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ * وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍ * وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍ

[Al-Waqi'ah 56:27-30]

until He said:

⁽³⁹⁾ A company of the former peoples ⁽⁴⁰⁾ And a company of the later peoples.

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ * وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ

[Al-Waqi'ah 56:39-40]

And He said regarding the companions of the left:

⁽⁴¹⁾ And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? ⁽⁴²⁾ [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water ⁽⁴³⁾ And a shade of black smoke, ⁽⁴⁴⁾ Neither cool nor beneficial. ⁽⁴⁵⁾ Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ * فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ * وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍ * لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ * إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ

[Al-Waqi'ah 56:41-45]

in this world, enjoying themselves in their bodies, in their clothing, in their vehicles, in their dwellings, in the utmost luxury

⁽⁴⁶⁾ And they used to persist in the great violation, ⁽⁴⁷⁾ And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? ⁽⁴⁸⁾ And our forefathers [as well]?"

وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيمِ * وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ * أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ
