It is reported in the hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to prohibit his family from wearing jewelry and silk. Is this prohibition for the sake of prohibition?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : You mentioned, Shaykh, that "the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - used to prohibit his family from wearing jewelry and silk."

The Shaykh : He did not prohibit it; he disliked it for them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : He disliked it.

The questioner : But I checked "Sunan al-Nasa'i," and it is written regarding 'Uqbah ibn 'Amir: "He used to prohibit his family from wearing jewelry and silk."

The Shaykh : Yes, and I referred you to al-Nasa'i yesterday, okay.

The questioner : It is written there that he prohibited his family.

The Shaykh : Yes, but prohibition does not mean it is forbidden; rather, it is a matter of scrupulousness and dislike.

The questioner : And by jewelry here, gold is meant.

The Shaykh : It is broader than that, even including silk, which is permissible for women. That is, the purpose of the Messenger - peace be upon him - regarding women is as he said in another hadith:
Beware of me and indulgence in luxury; for the servants of Allah are not those who indulge in luxury. إيَّاي والتنعُّمَ ؛ فإنَّ عباد الله ليسوا بالمتنعِّمين
Is that clear?

The questioner : Yes, it is clear, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Okay, and anything else?

The questioner : Okay, this jewelry, which we said we do not know about, if we turn away from it, does it fall within that category if we turn away from it?

The Shaykh : If it is jewelry, it falls within this broad category, which is not obligatory.

The questioner : Okay, even silver, Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Anything called jewelry, if it is permissible, the best is to avoid it for the scrupulous, righteous, and God-fearing women.

The questioner : Okay, and the saying of the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - to A'ishah: "When he saw two gold bracelets on her, he said:
Shall I not tell you of something that is better than this? Why don't you take these off and wear two bracelets of silver, and paint them yellow with saffron ألا أخبرك بما هو أحسن من هذا ؟ لو نزعت هذا وجعلت مسكتين من ورق ، ثم صفرتهما بزعفران
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5143Da'if (Darussalam)

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Okay.

The Shaykh : Yes, this indicates permissibility, and we do not differ on this.

The questioner : And the other door remains.

The Shaykh: Yes.
