How to reconcile the report from 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding his prohibition of following the traces of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

The questioner : There is a report from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he saw people rushing to a certain place, so he asked about it. They said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed there." So he forbade them from doing so and said: "If you catch up with the prayer, pray; and if you do not catch up with it, then..." What is the point of contradiction with 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar, who was considered one of the scholars of the Companions and who... followed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in all his actions? How do we reconcile the two statements?
The Shaykh : There is no doubt that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was more knowledgeable in jurisprudence than his son 'Abdullah, even though his son 'Abdullah appeared to be more devout than many of the Companions.. So 'Umar feared for the people, especially those who would come after, that they would fall into some of this exaggeration, so he forbade them from following the traces. As for Ibn 'Umar, 'Abdullah, he used to follow the traces of the Messenger (peace be upon him), and this was out of his love for his Prophet; he would exaggerate in following them in a way that his father 'Umar and the other Companions did not see. So 'Umar's position was closer to the principle of blocking the means to harm than the position of his son 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar.
So the correct position that all people should adopt is what 'Umar advised the people to do at that time, and not what his son 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar was doing; because this requires a person who is a jurist with precise jurisprudence, so that he stops at the limits and does not exaggerate in his love for the Messenger (peace be upon him). This love may drive some of the lovers to exaggerate in their beloved, as the Christians did with 'Isa (peace be upon him).
So what 'Umar did is the correct position in this matter; it is not permissible to follow the traces of the prophets. And among the evidence for this is his saying (peace be upon him):Sahih Muslim 827d. So the Messenger (peace be upon him) did not encourage following any of the traces of the prophets except these three mosques.

Beware of exaggeration in religion, for what destroyed those before you was their exaggeration in their religion.

Do not set out on a journey (for religious devotion) but for the three mosques-for this mosque of mine (at Medina) the Sacred Mosque (at Mecca), and the Mosque al-Aqsa (Bait al-Maqdis)
لا تُشدُّ الرحال إلا إلى ثلاثة مساجد : مسجدي هذا ، والمسجد الحرام ، والمسجد الأقصى
