If a person is unable to perform Hajj and dies while still unable, does his son’s ability obligate the son to perform Hajj on his father’s behalf?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Here, a questioner asks: If a person is unable to perform Hajj and dies while still unable, does the son’s ability obligate the son to perform Hajj on his father’s behalf? The answer is yes, and this is explicit in the hadith of al-Khath'amiah, where she described her father as having reached the age of Hajj while being an old, frail man who could not stay mounted on his mount. She asked, “Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Perform Hajj on his behalf. حجي عنه
, and in some hadiths:
He said: “What do you think if your father had a debt, would you pay it off for him?” She said: “Yes.” He said: “The debt of Allah is more deserving of being paid off.” أرأيت إن كان على أبيك دَين أفكنت تقضينه عنه قالت بلى قال عليه السلام فدين الله أحق أن يقضى
. However, we must note what is mentioned in the question, both in the hadith and in this question here: the father is unable to perform Hajj. Why? In the case of the hadith, when Hajj became obligatory, he was an elderly man and thus unable to perform it. Regarding what might be asked today: a man reaches a certain age and then dies without having been able to perform Hajj, either due to a lack of money, or a lack of strength and health, or any of the reasons that make Hajj obligatory. In this case, he was unable to perform Hajj, meaning Hajj was not obligatory upon him. If he died and Hajj was not obligatory upon him—meaning he was unable to perform it—and he has a child, even if it is a daughter, who is able to perform Hajj, then it is obligatory for her to perform Hajj, based on the aforementioned hadith of al-Khath'amiah.
