The Shaykh’s derivation from the second verse of Ibn al-Qayyim as another example of the issue of distinguishing between ahad and mutawatir

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... And in this second verse of the two verses by Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him), there is a reference to another example, different from the first example which concerns their distinction between ahad hadith and mutawatir hadith. They do not accept ahad hadith in matters of creed, even though this is contrary to the practice of the Salaf, who accepted all hadith in everything related to Islam, whether it was creed or ruling. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) points to this in his saying:
"No, and no denial of the attributes and their negation, *** out of fear of denial of the divine attributes and likening Allah to creation."
For the methodology followed by these later generations, contrary to the methodology of the Salaf, is the figurative interpretation of the verses and not following them as they came, without figurative interpretation and without denial of the divine attributes. The Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them), including the four Imams, held the position regarding the verses of attributes and hadiths of attributes of believing in the realities of their meanings without likening Allah to creation and without denial of the divine attributes.
Likening Allah to creation is the doctrine of those who liken Allah to creation; denial of the divine attributes is the doctrine of those who engage in figurative interpretation. As for the Salaf, they combined affirming the meanings of the attributes in their reality with purifying Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) from being like the created things. The Qur’anic text in this matter is explicit, as you know; namely, His saying (Mighty and Majestic):
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]
,
There is nothing like unto Him لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]
This is purification, and it is obligatory upon every Muslim. The later generations claimed that they purify the meaning of our Lord, the Lord of the worlds, but they exaggerated in purification, so they fell into denial of the divine attributes; which is the denial of the attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) by which our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) introduced Himself to His servants when He described Himself in some verses and in some hadiths. So the later generations nullified the meanings of these verses by taking them out of their apparent meanings; they claimed that they did so in the name of purification, so they contradicted the verses and contradicted the righteous Salaf who passed them over with their apparent and known meanings in the Arabic language, while purifying Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) from being like the created things.
