What is the authenticity of the hadith: “When there comes to you a man whose religion and character you are pleased with, marry him to your daughter”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The hadith:
When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to (someone under the care) of one of you, then marry to him. إذا أتاكم مَن ترضون دينه وخلقه فزوِّجوه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1084Da'if (Darussalam)
.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh: Well, I told you: it is strengthened by the multiplicity of its chains; so what is your question now?

The questioner: My question is: Well; how do you rely on this chain of al-Muzani; Abu Hatim al-Muzani, and in it are Muhammad and Sa'id ibn 'Ubayd, who are weak, and the one who narrated from them?

The Shaykh: ... Who told you ...?

The questioner: I mean, you are strengthening them.

The Shaykh: May Allah forgive you, how can you say: I am strengthening them?

The questioner: Muhammad and Sa'id ibn 'Ubayd are unknown, and the one who narrated from them is weak.

The Shaykh: There is no need for all this detail; the hadith is strong due to other evidence. What does this mean? If someone tells you: such a hadith is hasan li ghayrihi; what does that mean? Rather, I will tell you something else because it is more beneficial; do you know the difference between al-Tirmidhi saying: a hasan ghareeb hadith, and him saying: a hasan hadith?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: Well; I am asking you now? If you know the difference, I am satisfied with a short, brief answer; what does he mean by saying: a hasan hadith?

The questioner: A hasan hadith means hasan li dhatihi.

The Shaykh: His saying: a hasan hadith; a hasan li dhatihi hadith? You are wrong.

The questioner: It is a hasan li ghayrihi hadith, whereas a hasan ghareeb hadith is weak.

The Shaykh: O Shaykh - may Allah guide you - , I shortened the path. I asked you at the beginning; do you know the difference between al-Tirmidhi saying: a hasan ghareeb hadith, and him saying: a hasan hadith? You said: Yes. I was satisfied with your answer, so I split my question into two parts. I took the second part of my question: what does al-Tirmidhi mean by saying: a hasan hadith only? You said: It means it is a hasan li dhatihi hadith. I told you: This is wrong. If this is wrong; what does al-Tirmidhi mean by saying: a hasan ghareeb hadith? Perhaps you will not make another mistake.

The questioner: A hasan ghareeb hadith ... that it is weak, and he only said: a hasan hadith, hasan means li ghayrihi, this ... .

The Shaykh: Now, two questions were directed to you in one question, then we split the question into two parts. I directed to you a question from the first part; it is: What does al-Tirmidhi mean if he says: a hasan hadith only? You said: It means it is hasan li dhatihi, and this is wrong. But I also want to remind you, whether you are correct or wrong; what does he mean when he says: a hasan ghareeb hadith? Do not speak now about his saying: a hasan hadith, rather look at his saying: a hasan ghareeb hadith; what does it mean?

Another questioner: He does not know the answer.

The Shaykh: Well; what does the one who does not know do? I ask you, O Shaykh - may Allah guide you -?

The questioner: He asks the people of knowledge.

The Shaykh: Well; ask the people of knowledge if you find them. =
-- And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. I praise Allah and thank Him. Welcome, how is your health? Yes, yes, how? By Allah, it has become twelve o'clock, and I have a large gathering with me now, and I want to apologize to them, so there is no room, but you record and keep the recording, and call me tomorrow, and if you find some free time for me, I will invite you. Yes? No problem, yes? I am telling you: call me tomorrow morning, meaning between eight and nine, so we can set an appointment for you if you recorded something. Is there anything else? I say: Is there anything else? And peace be upon you, and upon you be peace -- .
= Al-Tirmidhi's saying: a hasan ghareeb hadith; means it is hasan li dhatihi, and his saying: a hasan hadith only means it is a hasan li ghayrihi hadith; contrary to what you think. And I used to think you would answer me correctly when you said: Al-Tirmidhi's saying: a hasan hadith means hasan li ghayrihi. I asked you this question to build upon it something that would make it easy for you to understand the truth, but you demolished what I built in my mind; due to your wrong statement that a hasan hadith means al-Tirmidhi's hasan li dhatihi. Wrong, it means hasan li ghayrihi.
