Abu Layla : Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
Umm al-Fadl: And upon you be peace, and Allah's mercy and blessings, and His forgiveness.
Abu Layla : May Allah grant you well-being.
Umm al-Fadl: How are you?
Abu Layla : May Allah preserve you and bless you. How is our Shaykh and everyone else?
Umm al-Fadl: We are well.
Abu Layla : Is our Shaykh present?

The Shaykh : Please go ahead. Yes.
Abu Layla : Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
Abu Layla : May Allah grant you well-being, my Shaykh. I apologize, Shaykh. We know that there are no questions at a time like this, but we have here a dear brother to us and to you, our brother Nu'man. The Shaykh : Our brother Nu'man. So, a problem occurred with his brother and with his brother's son-in-law. It is, Shaykh, regarding the Ramadan contests. In these contests, each person submits answers to questions posed during Ramadan on his own behalf, and then there is a prize.

The Shaykh : Before anything else, before you get into the matter, define what the prize is and who the prize is from?

The questioner : The prize is a car.

The Shaykh : This is the text of the answer, and the second answer.

The questioner : This, Shaykh, comes from the newspaper al-Dustur.

The Shaykh : That is complete. Good.

The questioner : So, the one who is the son-in-law of our brother Nu'man had submitted ten names.

The Shaykh : My brother, this person asked me what the benefit was, and one person asked the preacher, and you are the third.

The questioner : By Allah, our brother Nu'man does not know your answer. He wants to hear your opinion, meaning...

The Shaykh : My opinion is that we need to understand first what the text of the contest is. Is it in obedience to Allah, contrary to what the newspapers do, or is it in disobedience to Allah? That is first. And second, what was the aim of this person who submitted multiple names because of these false names? The contest is to be among many people, not one person with many names. So all of this, we told the questioner who claims that he is the one who submitted these names, and then the dispute arose between him and the one whose name the car was drawn under, and his name did nothing except that the one who deserved the car had submitted that name. Do you understand my words?

The questioner : Yes, my Shaykh.

The Shaykh : So I asked why you submitted these names falsely, and he did not answer. It became clear to me, and in my opinion, that there is a trick involved. And I do not want to be an aid in issuing a fatwa on a matter where the car is for Zayd or for Bakr, before I know the details of the matter. And the summary of that is: I know first the text of what we call the newspaper's [contest].

The questioner : Yes, my Shaykh, which is the prizes.

The Shaykh : The newspaper's offer, what is the text? And second, we understand from this person who submitted all these names what he aimed at by doing so, because I fear that there is a trick involved, intended to obtain the prize by any means, and the loss of this reward from the other people. Perhaps you understood me.

The questioner : Yes, by Allah, my Shaykh, I understood you. Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
