The discussion regarding the hadith of the maidservant whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "Where is Allah?" and she replied, "In the sky."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : I could have quoted ... the end of the hadith, but the truth, as you have seen with me, is that the entire hadith is knowledge from beginning to end, and it is all jurisprudence. This is the intent behind his saying (peace be upon him), the well-known one:
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religion
Sahih Muslim 1037a
. So, jurisprudence in the religion is jurisprudence in the Book of Allah and in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He said (peace be upon him) to Mu'awiyah:
Bring her to me.
. When she came, he said to her (peace and blessings be upon him):
Where is Allah?
... In the previous text, it is stated that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who established for us the practice of asking, "Where is Allah?" It is not we who innovated this question. We are followers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when we ask an authority, "Where is Allah?" The maidservant answered by saying: "In the sky."
Where is Allah?
The Messenger of Allah is the one asking.
Where is Allah?
She said: "In the sky." He said to her:
Who am I?
. She said: "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said to her master:
Free her; for she is a believer.
,
Set her free, for she is a believer.
. This concludes the hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, which was narrated by the imams of hadith: Imam Muslim in his *Sahih*, Imam Malik in his *Muwatta*, Imam Ahmad in his *Musnad*, and his student Imam Abu Dawud in his *Sunan*. Count as many books of the Sunnah as you wish; they all narrated this story. This is an authentic hadith, and Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah be pleased with him) and others used it as evidence. The entire Ummah accepted this hadith, and some rulings were derived from it, which we hinted at during our commentary on this authentic hadith. So what was the position of some scholars of *kalam* who did not follow his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
As long as you hold fast to two things which I have left among you, you will not go astray: God’s Book and His messenger’s sunna
Mishkat al-Masabih 186Hasan (Zubair `Aliza'i)
? It is not just the Book of Allah that is sufficient. Why? Because Allah said in the Qur'an:
And We revealed to you the message that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them
[An-Nahl 16:44]
. Thus, the Qur'an testifies to this hadith:
I have left with you two things, and you will not go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah. They will not separate until they come to me at the Pool.
.
