The Shaykh Shuqara's interjection on the subject of psychology

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student: It is possible ... our Shaykh.

The Shaykh: Please, my brother.
Shuqara: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows them. Our Shaykh's words, may Allah reward him with good, fulfilled what the principles that all sciences, without exception, should be founded upon require. However, I would like to add or clarify something that may be hidden from many people. First: what is known today as psychology is a newly invented science, and the Ummah did not know it before. This science came to us from the lands of the West. The goal of this science is to investigate the psychological problems and influences that arise in a society, and to provide solutions for these problems and influences, and to combine them based on an understanding of people's human needs. All of this is not founded on the scientific, Shari'ah-based perspective as our Shaykh indicated, but rather it is founded on the basis of purely material experiences. For example, in America, when they want to investigate the problems of youth, they see that these problems are based on the sexual perspective. The sexual perspective is the major knot in the life of the West. If they can, in light of psychology or on the basis of psychology, resolve this knot and provide appropriate solutions for youth that release them from this knot and allow them to move forward without complication, as they say, then they have reached the goal they desire. But as I said and mentioned earlier, they do not look at these solutions for these problems and these influences; they do not look to the Shari'ah. The Shari'ah is the farthest thing from them, because they do not concern themselves with it, and the Shari'ah does not concern itself with them, because they have cast it aside and turned away from it. They have forgotten that the Shari'ah of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) was in the past, and they know it and study it thoroughly. They knew that it resolves or can provide them with appropriate solutions, especially since they have become greatly aware of Islamic and Shari'ah sciences. But they do not want them at all. What confirms what I am saying is that many Muslim youth who want to obtain, for example, academic degrees like a master's or a doctorate, are not pleased to obtain these degrees from Muslim lands. They turn their faces toward those lands, enter the universities, and obtain academic degrees like a master's or a doctorate in Islamic Shari'ah, Islamic education, and other Islamic sciences from the universities of the West, which do not recognize their religion. So, they know the truth, but they ignore it in their hearts. Since this is the case, it is incumbent upon the people of knowledge in the lands of the Muslims that they look at this issue with a deep perspective and know that these sciences that have become part of our lives and our goals and objectives in our lands do not suit our lives at all. They import them and impose them on universities and practical institutions by force, not under the claim of knowledge or the epistemology of the sciences, or the sciences that are imported or come to us, but because we have become in need of these sciences. And this is where the danger and the greatest disease lie. Therefore, we must shake off these sciences and be certain that they are intended to harm us and to displace us. They are intended to harm us and to displace us from the methodology of truth, the methodology of the Islamic religion, which is sufficient for the human soul and the human mind, and for solving the problems that psychology and the other sciences those scholars established in light of problems in their life in the disbelieving Western society can never solve our problems, because they are completely contrary to our natures, first, and to our conditions, our societies, our beliefs, our upbringing, and other traditions, customs, and norms. So, they bring something very strange to place or pour into our minds. And I know many of those who brought degrees in psychology and education; they are the most unsuccessful people in establishing a scientific structure called the science or the structure of educational psychology. They are the most unsuccessful people in this. Why? Because they want to apply what they have in the West, what they learned and were taught there, and they want to apply it here in our schools and scientific institutions. This is absolutely impossible. After this, I say that Muslim scholars are now required to reject these imported theories that our life as Muslims rejects, rejects them completely. They should reject them and make the entire Ummah know that this science is a danger in its reality to our religion, our morals, our social life, our families, our schools, our education, and our upbringing, and so on. The solution to all problems in our lives is in our religion.
This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:3]
And what was a religion at that time is what is suitable to be a religion today. We have never known that the early Muslim societies needed such a science, because Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) gave this Ummah a penetrating insight into its religion and in its religion, by which it was able to reach the goal and find itself safe from every science that comes to it from near or far, not only in the early centuries it lived in, but in all the coming centuries the Ummah will live in. It is sufficient for us to read, for example, His saying (the Exalted):
And in yourselves. Then will you not see?
[Adh-Dhariyat 51:21]
And if psychology today, which comes to us from the West, is intended to solve problems in light of knowing these problems in light of the complex or simple human soul, or in light of innovations, experiments, or modern sciences, all of this we are in no need of if we reflect on, for example, His saying (the Exalted), for instance, we give a simple example. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) says regarding:
And when you ask them وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ
So ask them from behind a screen
No, the other verse. Yes.

The questioner :
And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition
[Al-Ahzab 33:53]
.
Shuqara: No, the verse. What is the verse? There is no deity but Allah
then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
[Al-Ahzab 33:32]
so let not
then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet
[Al-Ahzab 33:32]
Look at this detail of this verse. Yes.
The student: With the fa

Shuqara:
then do not be soft in speech [to men], lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
[Al-Ahzab 33:32]
Look at this verse. It is an address to the mothers of the believers and the women of the believers: that none of them should soften her speech when she speaks with a man. That is because softening speech causes arousal in the man's mind. This is a detail of the details. Another detail, for example:
And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
[An-Nur 24:31]
,
And let them not stamp their feet
[An-Nur 24:31]
,
And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment
[An-Nur 24:31]
This detail of the verse also draws our attention to something deep in the soul: that the interaction between the man and the woman does not need explanation and clarification with words and phrases, but rather the relationship arises through movement, the glance, the smile, and anything that issues from her. So, this movement or what arises from the woman corresponds to something that may not be against it but harmonizes with it in the man's mind. And so, psychology is the knowledge of the psychological perceptions that the man and the woman have, equally, to spare men and women together from news that threatens the destruction of souls, in light of the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The explanation and elaboration in this field is very long and very long indeed. I am content with these brief, quick hints. I ask permission. I also say: May Allah reward our Shaykh with the best reward for having given me this opportunity to interject in his conversation with these words, which I hope I have been successful in. And peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. May Allah benefit you. Do you have something about the topic or is it new?

The questioner: About the topic.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.
