Abu Malik: Therefore, we must know that the wealth which was the cause of extinguishing the spark of faith, severing the bonds of affection, enslaving this Ummah (the Muslim community) under the hands of its enemies, diminishing its land, stripping it of its bounties, and causing it to strike one part against another— we must know that this fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) is the most dangerous trial, and that we must rid ourselves of it and not let our hearts be attached to it. And what undoubtedly takes the place of this trial is that we know that the Hereafter is better for us and more lasting, and that the Hereafter, in which Allah Mighty and Majestic said what He said about prioritizing it over this world and encouraging people to work for it, will not be attained by mere wishing, but only through striving with righteous deeds, continuous giving, unceasing effort, and seeking knowledge and understanding, for the Hereafter necessarily requires knowledge, and knowledge is not achieved except through two or three things.
As for the first thing: that I seek knowledge while I make my intention sincere for Allah, then after that I act upon this knowledge, then after that I call people to it. If people love us and prefer us over others, follow us, obey our words, and listen to our speech... their true knowledge of the truth of knowledge will not be except if we prefer the Hereafter over this world, and learn the knowledge by which we reach the reality of this abode about which Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said: [Al-'Ankabut 29:64] So we ask Allah Glorified and Exalted to gather us upon good always, to guide us to what He loves and is pleased with, to teach us what benefits us, to benefit us with what He teaches us, and to make us among those who listen to the statement and then follow the best of it. And we ask Allah Glorified and Exalted also to extend the life of our Shaykh (a scholar or teacher), to bless us in his knowledge, and to grant the Muslims a share of it from which they benefit for their Hereafter [Al-A'la 87:17] And may Allah send prayers and blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions and peace.
The Shaykh: May Allah reward you with good and bless you.
As for the first thing: that I seek knowledge while I make my intention sincere for Allah, then after that I act upon this knowledge, then after that I call people to it.
Be ascetic in what is with people, be ascetic in this world and Allah will love you, and be ascetic in what is with people and people will love you.
ازهد في فيما عند الناس ازهد في الدنيا يحبك الله, وازهد فيما عند الناس يحبك الناسAnd indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.
وإن الآخرة لهي الحيوان لو كانوا يعلمونWhile the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
والآخرة خير وأبقىThe Shaykh: May Allah reward you with good and bless you.
