The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says: “It was narrated from Nafi’ that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him ‘O Nafi’, the blood is agitated in me’ ‘The blood is agitated in me’ means it is agitated. So seek out a cupper for me. Ibn ‘Umar said this to his slave Nafi’ ‘So seek out a cupper for me, and make him a companion if you can, but do not make him an old man or a young boy.’ This is clear, because an old man may be unable to perfect his craft, and a young boy likewise does not have experience and does not have complete care. Ibn ‘Umar said: “For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: Cupping on an empty stomach is best.” This is like many of the treatments that doctors treat today, where they require the patient to come to the doctor on an empty stomach. This is based on what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought specifically regarding cupping. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said
Cupping on an empty stomach is better الحجامة على الريق أمثل
Sunan Ibn Majah 3487Da’if (Darussalam)
meaning it is more beneficial
And in it is healing and blessing, and it increases in intellect and in memory. So cup yourselves on the blessing of Allah on Thursday, and avoid cupping on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, seeking to avoid them. وفيها شفاء وبركة وتزيد في العقل وفي الحفظ واحتجموا على بركة الله يوم الخميس واجتنبوا الحجامة يوم الأربعاء والجمعة والسبت والأحد تحرّيا
meaning seek to avoid cupping on these days: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And cup on Monday. So it became with us on Thursday, and this is Monday.
and Tuesdays, for that is the day on which Allah relieved Ayyub of Calamity, and He inflicted calamity upon him on a Wednesday, and leprosy and leucoderma only appear on Wednesdays, or on the night of Wednesday. والثلاثاء فإنه اليوم الذي عافى الله فيه أيوب عليه السلام وضربه بالبلاء يوم الأربعاء فإنه لا يبدو جذام ولا برص إلا يوم الأربعاء أو ليلة الأربعاء
Sunan Ibn Majah 3487Da’if (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ibn Majah from Sa‘id ibn Maymun. I do not recall any criticism or vindication regarding him. From Nafi’ and from al-Hasan ibn Abi Ja‘far from Muhammad ibn Jahadah. In my original text here it is Ibn Abi Jahadah, which is an error, and the correct is from Muhammad ibn Jahadah from Nafi’. The discussion regarding al-Hasan and Muhammad will follow.
Here is a long discussion by the author, and the summary is that this hadith hinges on Muhammad ibn Jahadah. If this hadith were restricted to a single path, for example the path of Sa‘id ibn Maymun, about whom the author says he does not recall any criticism or vindication, then the man would be unknown and the hadith would consequently be weak and not used as evidence. But the reality is that this hadith has many paths to Muhammad ibn Jahadah, and Muhammad ibn Jahadah himself is trustworthy; the two Shaykhs used him as evidence. And I have spoken about these paths in “Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahihah” where the strength of this hadith is explained.
After that, the author cites two hadiths, one of which is weak and the other is fabricated, so we also skip them.
With this hadith narrated by Ibn ‘Umar, the chapter on encouraging cupping ends. I repeat the hadith to you so that at least its meaning settles in your minds.
Cupping on an empty stomach is best, and in it is healing and blessing, and it increases in intellect and in memory. So cup yourselves on the blessing of Allah on Thursday, and avoid cupping on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, seeking to avoid them. And cup yourselves on Monday and Tuesday, for it is the day in which Allah granted relief to Ayyub, and He struck him with affliction on Wednesday. For leprosy and leprosy-like disease do not appear except on Wednesday or the night of Wednesday.
The lesson after this is on encouraging visiting the sick and emphasizing it.
What did I tell you about the hadiths after the hadith of Abu Hurayrah? After the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, I told you about two hadiths after the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, starting with his statement in a narration mentioned by Razin to the end of it; both are weak.
