The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
"Al-Mawlawiyyah," the session of dhikr accompanied by movements like dancing: when did it come into existence? I do not know. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding it? Complete rejection. What is the correct dhikr in Islam? It is what the Messenger (peace be upon him) brought, in terms of quantity and quality. This is the correct dhikr that we must know: it is what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, in terms of quality and quantity. Quality refers to the wording, or what is related to it, such as raising the voice or keeping it low, gathering or separating; all of these must be observed for the dhikr to be in accordance with the Shari'ah. As for quantity, a person must adhere to the number if the Shari'ah specifies a number. If the Shari'ah does not specify a number, it is not permissible for him to adhere to any number, because this falls under legislation. Limiting dhikr to a specific number that the Messenger (peace be upon him) did not specify is legislation, and this is, of course, not permissible. Therefore, whoever wants to remember Allah with a dhikr that is established in the Shari'ah without a specific number should recite this dhikr as much as he wishes, without a number. And the opposite is the opposite: any dhikr that is established in the Shari'ah with a specific number, it is not permissible to detach this number from it; rather, he should adhere to it without increasing or decreasing.
As for the forms, as we mentioned: dhikr in a group according to what came in the Shari'ah, we gather, as he (peace be upon him) said:
and the angels would surround them وما اجتمع قومٌ في بيت من بيوت الله - تبارك وتعالى - إلا حفَّتْهم الملائكة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
, to the end of the hadith. This gathering is not intended to be a gathering for a specific dhikr with one voice, as they do today. This is from the additional innovations, as Imam al-Shatibi says. Rather, they gather if it is in a lesson like the one we are in, where one of them reads, teaches, and reminds, and the others listen to him and pay attention. Or one of them reads from the Qur'an what is easy for him, and the others listen; this is called gathering. It is not necessary, for this hadith and its like to apply to the gatherers, that they remember Allah with one voice or recite the Qur'an with one voice. No, because the Messenger (peace be upon him) was his way in this. He said to Ibn Mas'ud, to Ubayy ibn Ka'b:
Read to me the Qur'an. اقرأ عليَّ القرآن
. He said: "Shall I read to you and you to me?" He (peace be upon him) said:
Recite (of the Qur'an) for me," I said, "Shall I recite it to you although it had been revealed to you?" He said, "I like to hear (the Qur'an) from others. اقرأ ؛ فإني أحبُّ أن أسمعَه من غيري
Sahih al-Bukhari 4582
. So he listens to what is read to him. This is called gathering for the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). The point is that the prescribed dhikr is that in which its practitioner adheres to the dhikr established in the Sunnah in terms of quantity and quality. As for what is not established, it is a sea with no shore, unfortunately.
