What is meant by the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic)?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is meant by the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic)?

The Shaykh : What is meant by the remembrance of Allah?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : The remembrance of Allah is divided into two categories: verbal remembrance and remembrance of the heart. The adhkar (remembrances) that came in the Book and the Sunnah refer to verbal remembrance. Verbal remembrance includes remembrance of the heart. If remembrance of the heart is devoid of verbal remembrance, it is not considered remembrance, but rather mere thinking.
For example, some people read by opening the mushaf and reading with their minds without moving their tongues. This is not reading and it is not remembrance; therefore, the virtue of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever reads the Qur'an, he will have ten good deeds for every letter. I do not say that alif-lam-mim is one letter, but rather alif is a letter, lam is a letter, and mim is a letter.
is not recorded for them. The one who reads from the mushaf with his eyes is not granted this immense reward. This is called thinking. Thinking is only in the verses of Allah and in His dominion in the heavens and the earth, as our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) indicated in His saying:
Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
This is verbal and heart remembrance. Then He said:
give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
= -- May Allah have mercy on you -- =
give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
This is heart remembrance. Then, after His saying:
give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
, He said:
Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
This is verbal and heart remembrance. We must therefore be aware of two things: in the prescribed remembrance, both the movement of the tongue and the presence of the heart must be present. If one of them is lacking, it ceases to be remembrance. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : In the Shari'ah, remembrance requires both the remembrance of the tongue and the remembrance of the heart. If one of them is lacking, it ceases to be remembrance. Do you understand? A person may remember Allah, but if his heart is heedless and distracted, this remembrance has no value. Another person may remember Allah in his heart and with his eyes, but if he does not move his tongue, this is not remembrance. Therefore, Shari'ah remembrance is the combination of the remembrance of the tongue and the remembrance of the heart.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
