Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah reward the honorableThe Shaykh : I read two of your opinions regarding wiping over the leather socks. In one, you said, may Allah preserve you: to begin wiping the right before the left, and in the other, you said to wipe both together. Which is the more correct, and which is your final position? May Allah guide you, preserve you, and make you beneficial.

The Shaykh : Both are correct; the matter is broad. If you wish, wipe over both together, and if you wish, begin with the right before the left. This is because the hadith of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him)
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution. He said: So I reached out to remove his socks, but he said: Leave them, for I put them on in a state of purity. So he wiped over them. أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم توضأ، يقول : فأهويت لأنزع خفيه فقال دعهما فإني أدخلتهما طاهرتين فمسح عليهما
does not mention that he began with the right before the left. It is possible that he wiped over both together, and some scholars have said this, analogizing it to the ears, for the ears are wiped together. Other scholars have said: rather, the right is given precedence, because wiping is a substitute for washing, and the substitute has the ruling of the thing it substitutes. In washing, the right foot is given precedence over the left foot. The matter is broad in this regard: if he wishes, he wipes over both together at one time, and if he wishes, he begins with the right, then the left.
