How to Wipe Over the Socks
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A. A. S. from al-Kharj says in his question: I saw one of the brothers wiping over his right sock with his right hand, and over his left sock with his left hand, at the same time—that is, all together. My question, O honorable Shaykh, is not the order and continuity among the conditions of wiping over the leather socks? That is, is it not supposed that he wipes the right foot, then wipes the left foot after it?
And another question, O honorable Shaykh: Is it better to wipe with the right hand, or is there leeway in the matter? Please give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A: The Sunnah is to begin with the right foot before the left, like the full ritual bath; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 402 and the saying of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Bulugh al-Maram 44 It is agreed upon that it is authentic. So if he wipes the right foot with the right hand, and the left foot with the left hand, there is nothing wrong with it if he begins with the right. And if he wipes both together with the right hand or the left hand, there is no blame on him.
And the majority of the scholars have held that beginning with the right of the two hands and the two feet is recommended, not obligatory. What is obligatory is the order between the face and the hands, then the head, then the feet.
As for giving precedence to one of the hands over the other, or one of the feet over the other, that is recommended, not obligatory. And the most cautious course for the believer is to begin with the right of the two hands and the two feet in the full ritual bath and the wiping; acting in accordance with the scriptural evidence, and to avoid the disagreement. And success is from Allah.
