The Shaykh : Those who wish to strive in the path of Allah should remember with us the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The mujahid is the one who strives against his own desires for the sake of Allah. المجاهد من جاهد هواه لله
Striving against the desires of the self is not merely a claim that "I will fight and I will strive in the path of Allah." Rather, it is a life that a person lives in obedience to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), striving against the desires of the self, whether that is against his own self, or against his wife, or against his son, or against his daughter. This is the jihad. From this, some of the contemporary scholars in this time have said a phrase that I like, and I repeat it often, and very often, because it seems to be inspired by the heavens. I conclude this sermon with this phrase so that you may reflect upon it and upon what has passed of explanation and facts: "Establish the state of Islam in your hearts, and it will be established for you on your land." Before the Muslims establish the rulings of Islam in their souls, they will not be able to establish them on their land. If we are truly sincere when we claim, or when some Islamic groups claim, that they want to establish the rule of Allah on earth, these people will not be able to realize this beautiful claim. However, it must first be realized in their hearts. If they are sincere in that, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) will enable them to establish the state of Islam on their land. Therefore, I say, as advice to all Muslims in all the countries that have been afflicted by this trial, as individuals: stay in your homes, be the rugs of your homes, do not fight, and preserve your blood for the day when the word of truth is declared truly, and the word of jihad is declared sincerely. On that day, the believers will rejoice in the victory of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). This is sufficient for now, and it is now nine o'clock, and I have seen that some people have submitted questions.
