The questioner : The questioner says: My husband had a friend who worked as a driver for the wealthy, and this wealthy man would slaughter many animals to distribute them to the poor, so this driver would bring us some of the meat and say that he could not find anyone to give this meat to, even though our financial situation is comfortable. Is this meat forbidden for us or not? And if it is forbidden, what must we do in return for the meat we took? We ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : If this money that this rich man gives in charity is specified as being for the poor, then it is not permissible for the rich man to take from it. But if he gives it in charity to a poor person, and then the poor person donates it to a rich person, there is no harm, because when the poor person receives it as charity, it becomes his property and he may dispose of it as he wishes. However, if the rich man says, "These animals, these foods, and these clothes are charity," and does not say "for the poor," then the rich man may take from them, but he should not take from them when there are people in need of them, because the needy have a stronger right to them.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
