What is the ruling on public auctions inside the mosque?

The questioner: His EminenceThe Shaykh : After we finished the Friday prayer today at the university mosque in Irbid, the imam called for a public auction. He brought out a piece of a rocket—I don’t know what it was—and held a public auction. Is this permissible inside the mosque?

The Shaykh : No, it is not permissible. May Allah guide them. The congregation innovates a new religious innovation every day, and they think they are doing a good deed.
